Frequently asked questions
How much RAM does a Windrose server need with you?
Windrose is an Unreal Engine 5 server and needs noticeably more than small co-op titles: 8 GB for 2 players, 12 GB for 4 and 16 GB for 10 players according to the developer table. We start at 8 GB and recommend 12 GB for a typical crew.
How many people fit on the server at once?
You set up to 10 slots in the dashboard (MaxPlayerCount). The developers recommend a maximum of 8 players per server; for 10 you should book 16 GB RAM.
How do my friends get onto the server?
Via Direct Connect: in the game, open Multiplayer and type in the IP address and port from your dashboard. We have disabled the invite-code mode with NAT punch-through because it needs UPnP on the host — Direct Connect always works.
Does the server run on Linux or do I need Windows?
The official dedicated server only exists as a Windows build; with us it runs under Wine in a container, just like Sons of the Forest or Icarus. Nothing to set up on your side: install via SteamCMD, update on start, settings in R5/ServerDescription.json.
How fast can I get going after ordering?
The Windows build is only around 5 GB, so expect 3 to 5 minutes until the first start. Then set the server name, player count and optionally a password (password protection on + password) in the panel. Client and server must run the same game version — auto-update keeps the server current.
Can I back up our world and move it later?
Yes, save games live under R5/Saved/SaveProfiles in the server directory. Download them via the file manager in the dashboard and upload them to a new server. Before big updates a manual backup on top of the scheduled backups is worth it.
Do I get a subdomain for my server?
Every mcfreehost server ships with its own address such as yourserver.mc.mcfreehost.com right from the start. Rename it anytime from the dashboard — no ticket required.
What do add-ons like bots and databases cost?
Monitoring and database add-ons — Uptime Kuma, MariaDB, phpMyAdmin, Game Server Watcher — never carry a surcharge. For music and chat bots, the first slot you activate is included; every additional bot is billed on top, and the dashboard shows the exact cost before you switch it on.
How long until I can actually play?
Typical initial setup: about 5 minutes. Queues or large installations can take longer. Larger Steam installs can take a bit longer depending on the game.
Am I locked into a long-term contract?
No — you are on a subscription that renews monthly, and you can cancel it from the dashboard whenever you like; the same goes for turning off automatic renewal.
Are the servers located in Germany?
You choose the location at checkout: Germany (Falkenstein and Limburg) or France (Roubaix) — all in the EU, connected to the major European exchanges. Low pings for players across Germany, Austria and Switzerland at both locations, and solid latency for the rest of Europe.
Which provider is best for my server?
The best provider is the one that shows you what you get before you pay: RAM, slots, location, price and cancellation terms. Here the price and resources are visible in the configurator before checkout, there is no minimum term and setup is automated — feel free to compare that with other offers.
Should I host the server myself or rent one?
Self-hosting costs power, time and a machine that runs around the clock; port forwarding, updates and backups are on you. A rented server is online within minutes, keeps running when your PC is off, and updates and backups are included; the network protection that applies to your server is shown in the configurator before you order. For one or two friends on a single evening self-hosting is often fine — for a persistent world, renting pays off.
