Before your first session together

Agree on a build

Server and players need matching builds. Build 41 and Build 42 use separate save games; back up your world before switching.

Coordinate Workshop mods

Check build compatibility and dependencies. Workshop IDs and internal mod IDs are different; the selection must match on server and clients.

Create backups deliberately

Make a panel backup before updates and changes. Game-generated backups and their rotation are an additional mechanism; do not rely on them alone.

Your world determines RAM needs

Mods, explored map areas and active players affect memory usage. These cards are starting suggestions, not guaranteed player limits.

Project Zomboid server RAM recommendations

Starting points, not a performance guarantee: Workshop mods, map mods and the zombie population drive memory usage more than the raw player count. The player column is the same estimate as in the configurator. The price applies to the RAM tier listed.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a Project Zomboid server cost?
A Project Zomboid server costs from €7.59 per month with us (from 4 GB RAM), up to €29.43 for the largest tier. The configurator shows the exact monthly price before you pay; the subscription can be cancelled monthly. Examples: 4 GB RAM with 24 GB NVMe for €7.59; 6 GB RAM with 32 GB NVMe for €11.23; 12 GB RAM with 60 GB NVMe for €22.15.
Is Project Zomboid beginner-friendly?
It is one of the hardest survival games out there — death is permanent. Start in sandbox mode with low zombie population, no forced sleep and better starting gear: that way you learn the mechanics without constant frustrating restarts.
How many survivors fit on the server?
You can raise the limit to 100 in the panel, but from 32 the game itself warns about desync in build 42 — so we plan for up to 32 players. Rule of thumb: 4 GB RAM for up to 8 players, 6 GB for 12, 16 GB for 32 — and an extra 2 GB with mod packs like Hydrocraft or Brita.
How do Workshop mods get onto the server?
Enter the Workshop IDs in the server configuration and the server downloads the mods itself. Your fellow players must have subscribed to the same mods, or the server rejects them on connect.
Can we adjust the game rules?
Completely: via SandboxVars.lua in the dashboard you set zombie speed, spawn rates, loot, seasons, power and water duration and 100+ more parameters — multiple presets included.
Do we lose our world if we take a break?
No. Project Zomboid stores the entire world state — zombie positions, houses, loot. After a restart it continues exactly from the last save point.
Does the stable build 42 run?
Yes, build 42.20 (stable since July 2026) is supported. Before switching versions or beta branches: take a backup and check your Workshop mods for compatibility.
Do I get a subdomain for my server?
Every mcfreehost server ships with its own address such as yourserver.mc.mcfreehost.com right from the start. Rename it anytime from the dashboard — no ticket required.
What do add-ons like bots and databases cost?
Monitoring and database add-ons — Uptime Kuma, MariaDB, phpMyAdmin, Game Server Watcher — never carry a surcharge. For music and chat bots, the first slot you activate is included; every additional bot is billed on top, and the dashboard shows the exact cost before you switch it on.
How long until I can actually play?
Typical initial setup: about 4 minutes. Queues or large installations can take longer. Larger Steam installs can take a bit longer depending on the game.
Am I locked into a long-term contract?
No — you are on a subscription that renews monthly, and you can cancel it from the dashboard whenever you like; the same goes for turning off automatic renewal.
Are the servers located in Germany?
You choose the location at checkout: Germany (Falkenstein and Limburg) or France (Roubaix) — all in the EU, connected to the major European exchanges. Low pings for players across Germany, Austria and Switzerland at both locations, and solid latency for the rest of Europe.
Which provider is best for my server?
The best provider is the one that shows you what you get before you pay: RAM, slots, location, price and cancellation terms. Here the price and resources are visible in the configurator before checkout, there is no minimum term and setup is automated — feel free to compare that with other offers. Project Zomboid starts here at 7.59 EUR per month, and setup typically takes about 4 minutes.
Should I host the server myself or rent one?
Self-hosting costs power, time and a machine that runs around the clock; port forwarding, updates and backups are on you. A rented server is online within minutes, keeps running when your PC is off, and updates and backups are included; data-center DDoS protection is included at every location. For one or two friends on a single evening self-hosting is often fine — for a persistent world, renting pays off.
Can I increase or decrease the RAM later?
Yes, you can do it yourself in the customer area using a slider. An upgrade takes effect immediately: you only pay the prorated difference for the remaining term, and the new price applies from the next renewal. A downgrade takes effect on the next renewal date. Your world, settings and subdomain are kept, and depending on the game, a restart is required afterwards. With monthly payment and a minimum term, the change is only possible once that term has ended, and for games with a slot-based plan it is not available.
