Bedrock Server or Java Server with Geyser?

A Bedrock Dedicated Server uses the native Bedrock server software. Paper, on the other hand, is Java server software. Geyser gives Bedrock clients access to a properly configured Java server; it doesn't turn that server's world into a native Bedrock server. So first decide which server type you're actually running.

For a native Bedrock server, check the official Bedrock download and the version display in the startup log. For Java with Geyser, check the Java server, Geyser, and the actual client version together. Don't install Bedrock server files into a Paper installation to fix a version error.

Updating Safely

1. Note the previous server version and the add-ons in use. Check whether players are already using a newer client version.
2. Stop the server cleanly and back up the world, configuration, and the extensions in use together. Download a copy outside the server.
3. For a native Bedrock server, only choose a matching Bedrock target version. If it's not yet available in your management panel, don't force a switch using files from different server software.
4. After starting, check the version actually loaded, any error messages, and that the correct world loads.

Why can't a player join after the update?

Compare the client and server versions and read the exact error message. For Java crossplay, Geyser belongs in this check too. A process starting successfully doesn't prove protocol compatibility with every client.

Can I just start an updated world with an older version?

Don't rely on that. To roll back, use the previous server software together with its corresponding world backup. Simply swapping the executable file isn't a full rollback.
