Minecraft Bedrock is strictly versioned: phone, console and Windows Store clients update automatically – and a server on an older version rejects current clients with a version error. That is why we keep your Bedrock server up to date automatically by default. If you temporarily do not want that, your server panel has an "Automatic updates" switch.

How the automatic update works

Our automation regularly checks whether Mojang has released a new Bedrock server version and then updates your server on its own. The rules:

  • Updates only run while nobody is online on your server – active play sessions are never interrupted.
  • A backup is taken before every update. Your worlds, server.properties, permissions and allowlist are preserved.
  • Sleeping servers (inactive servers sleep on our platform to save resources) are never woken up for an update. They catch up right when they next wake – so your server is joinable for all current clients after waking.
  • Minecraft Java servers are not affected: their version stays pinned until you change it yourself via the version switcher – keeping plugins and worlds compatible.

When pausing updates can make sense

Occasionally you may want to postpone an update for a few days – for example when an addon or behavior pack you use still has problems with the latest Bedrock version and you are waiting for a fix. For such cases you can disable automatic updates per server.

The risk of an outdated server

Always keep in mind: your players cannot choose their client version. As soon as their devices have installed the latest Bedrock update, they can no longer join your server until it has been updated too. Permanently disabled auto-updates practically always end in a server nobody can join. Our recommendation: pause updates deliberately and briefly – then re-enable them.

How to turn automatic updates off or on

You will find the switch in your server panel under Settings → General. It takes effect immediately: while disabled, our automation skips your server. To catch up, simply re-enable it – your server updates on the next automation run (or when it next wakes).

FAQ

Do I lose my world during an automatic update?

No. The update only replaces the server software. Worlds, settings, permissions and the allowlist are preserved, and a backup is automatically taken before every update.

Why don't I see the switch on my Java server?

Because Minecraft Java servers are always version-pinned on our platform – an unwanted update could break plugins and worlds. You change the version deliberately via the version switcher in the panel.

My server is sleeping – will it be woken for an update?

No. Sleeping servers stay undisturbed and automatically catch up on a pending update right when they next wake.

What happens if my server stays outdated for too long?

Current Bedrock clients can no longer join until it has been updated. Re-enable the switch – the automation applies the update as soon as nobody is online, and your server becomes reachable for everyone again.
