Checked on September 23, 2026. Minecraft 26.3 "Wilderness Bound" has been released since September 15, and Fabric supports the version: the stable Fabric Loader remains 0.19.5, and the matching Fabric API as of the check date is 0.161.0+26.3 (September 18). The Fabric team explicitly asks players for patience until mod authors catch up, and recommends a world backup before every switch. At mcfreehost, you can currently select Fabric servers up to Minecraft 26.2; we'll unlock 26.3 as soon as a test server demonstrably starts with it, including crossplay.

What 26.3 Changes for Fabric Servers

According to the Fabric blog on 26.3, Mojang has switched several systems to data packs and item components. Fabric API has therefore removed some interfaces:

  • FuelRegistry and CompostingChanceRegistry are removed: fuel, brewing ingredients, and compostability are now controlled by the item components COOKING_FUEL, BREWING_FUEL, and COMPOSTABLE.
  • FabricPotionBrewingBuilder is removed: like other recipes, brewing recipes are now data-driven and stored as JSON in the data pack.
  • StrippableBlockRegistry, TillableBlockRegistry, and FlattenableBlockRegistry are removed in favor of the new "Block Transformer" (stripping, tilling, paths).
  • World generation: configured features are now located in the new worldgen/feature folder, and surface rules are now called material rules (worldgen/material_rule).

What this means in practice: Many mods built for 26.2 won't start under 26.3, or only with limitations. This applies especially to mods with their own fuels, plants, potions, or custom world generation. Data packs with custom features or surface rules also need to be adjusted. So only switch once every mod on your list has a version explicitly released for 26.3.

Telling Loader, API, and Minecraft Apart

The loader starts Fabric mods; Fabric API and Minecraft itself have their own version numbers. A loader update is therefore neither a Minecraft update nor a green light for every mod. The suffix of the Fabric API shows the Minecraft version: 0.161.0+26.3 belongs to 26.3, and for 26.2 you need a file with the suffix +26.2. Matching leading numbers don't make the files interchangeable.

Preparing and Checking the Update

  1. Stop the server and back up the world, configuration, mods, and the previous version set together. Also download the backup.
  2. Check for each mod whether there's a version for the target version. For a ready-made modpack, the version set published by the pack applies.
  3. Set up the switch on a test copy first. Don't change the loader, API, and Minecraft version individually by feel, but as a verified set.
  4. Check the startup log for the loader version, missing dependencies, and incompatible mods.
  5. Test login, world loading, and the most important mod features. Once a world has been saved with 26.3, you shouldn't continue running it with 26.2. You'll need the backup to go back.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I already switch my Fabric server to 26.3 at mcfreehost?

Not yet. Fabric is currently selectable up to 26.2, because we only release each version once a test server demonstrably starts with it, including Bedrock crossplay. For 26.3, this verification is still pending.

Why doesn't my mod start under 26.3, even though the loader is up to date?

The loader is rarely the problem. Under 26.3, several Fabric API interfaces that older mods rely on have been removed. The mod needs its own 26.3 version from its author.

Does every player need to use the same loader version?

What matters are the requirements of the modpack and its mods. Provide the prescribed client configuration and test it against the server.

Can I keep using Paper plugins on Fabric?

No. Paper plugins and Fabric mods use different extension systems. Look for an alternative explicitly offered for Fabric.
