For your small group, the first thing to decide is whether everyone can launch the pack and whether its gameplay suits you. Cobblemon and Pixelmon both bring Pokémon to Minecraft Java. A difference in loader, a larger download, or an old RAM figure alone does not tell you which game your friends will prefer.
At mcfreehost, the reviewed entries Cobblemon Official 1.8.1 and The Pixelmon Modpack 9.4.1 are each listed with 6 GB of offer RAM. Cobblemon Optimised is a separate 4 GB entry. None of these entries is a free 2 GB pack offer. Clear up this cost question before you commit to a modded Pokémon world.
As of October 7, 2026: The official Modrinth version list marks Pixelmon Modpack 9.4.1 as a release; 9.4.0 is still labeled a beta there. The earlier beta label for 9.4.1 therefore no longer matches the current status. A release label does not guarantee freedom from bugs or compatibility with every additional mod.
The Technical Comparison for Your Invitation
Pack version and practical consequence
---
Cobblemon Official 1.8.1: in the reviewed MCF offer, Minecraft 1.21.1, Fabric Loader 0.19.5, and 6 GB. Friends use the matching Official instance.
The Pixelmon Modpack 9.4.1: Minecraft 1.21.1, NeoForge 21.1.248, and 6 GB. A Fabric client does not fit this server.
Cobblemon Optimised: a standalone offer with 4 GB. The same Pokémon mod does not automatically mean the same complete pack composition.
Bedrock on phone or console: cannot load the Java content mods of either described pack; Geyser does not transfer this content.
Your own add-ons: require matching Minecraft, loader, and mod versions. Paper/Spigot plugins are not interchangeable with Fabric or NeoForge mods.
The Fabric specification applies to the Official setup offered here. As a project, Cobblemon also has other loader releases; do not confuse project support with the specific server entry. For Pixelmon 9.3 and newer, the official installation wiki specifies NeoForge and Java 21. It also requires the same Pixelmon version on connecting clients and lists at least 4 GB of allocated memory, depending on additional mods and player count.
The version table in that wiki article is older than the 9.4.1 entry reviewed here. For your invitation, the pack version actually installed is therefore what counts. A "Latest Release" profile or a random guide for an old Forge line does not replace the version check.
Decide Based on a Shared Game Night
Before installing, collect three concrete wishes. For example: you all want to join without technical help, catch Pokémon, and battle each other near your shared base. Or you want a specific additional arena, quest, or breeding feature. Note which pack or add-on you know that feature from.
A video about "Cobblemon" may show COBBLEVERSE with its own extensions. A Pixelmon server may use additional sidemods. So check the desired feature in the pack you actually want to choose, rather than judging both core mods based on someone else's server advertising.
For the first attempt, start an unmodified matching instance. First check without extra shaders or new mods whether everyone can join. Personal graphics settings may differ; required gameplay mods and versions must match. A laggy camera on a friend's computer is no proof that the server is too small.

The Pokémon was placed for the screenshot. The image shows the mod in game, not a measured natural spawn rate and not a statement about the player limit.
What You Are Actually Checking in the Test
- Invitation: Each friend receives the pack name, version, Minecraft, loader, and the actual address with port. No shared panel password.
- Joining: Everyone starts the matching instance and connects with their normal account. A mod rejection is checked across the affected versions.
- First encounter: Try the starter, catching, and a desired battle situation. Use your actual rules rather than only prepared admin spawns.
- Everyday use: Check the menus and the PC that matter to you. A successful connection alone says nothing about these features.
- Progress: Reconnect and verify the saved contents. Then plan a longer shared trial run if the basic functions work.
The MCF modpack join guide helps with the technical comparison. For Cobblemon, the main guide covers setup, permissions, spawns, and updates. A permission node from the Cobblemon reference is not automatically a Pixelmon node.
Historical Measurements: Not a Shared RAM Ranking
On September 27, 2026, Pixelmon 9.4.1 was tested for ten minutes with a real Java client without OP. The test setup had a 6 GiB Java heap, a container limit of roughly 7.2 GiB, and 150% CPU. The 40 container samples ranged between 3.223 and 3.226 GiB. Nine TPS queries each reported 20 TPS; their mean tick times ranged between 1.188 and 4.259 ms.
That was movement in an already visited environment with death and respawn, at times also with an open death screen. It was not a measurement of several real friends, new distant areas, raids, or a whole weekend. The published individual values and limitations make the limited scope clear.
The Cobblemon figures from older tests come from other versions and partly modified bot connections. A used Java heap there and a container value for Pixelmon are also different metrics. Comparing these results as "Cobblemon needs X percent less RAM" would not be reliable.
Even older idle values and the startup time of a single server do not answer the question of your simultaneous play. If that question is decisive, you need the same observation procedure with your actual group and separate figures for heap, container, tick time, and client FPS.

The landscape comes from the photographed pack. New worldgen content does not automatically appear in every already saved chunk of another world.
Operation After the Choice
Choose one person responsible for technical changes. Regular players do not need OP, only the necessary game permissions. In the historical Pixelmon test, the PC was checked with the actually evaluated command.pc; a similar-looking node alone did not prove the permission. Apply such findings only to a matching tested combination.
Change rules one at a time and back up the baseline. Cobblemon has its main configuration and further pack files; Pixelmon uses several configuration files of its own. A smaller number of visible files does not automatically make the whole server lighter or all settings reloadable.
Before switching packs, back up the world, player/Pokémon data, mod state, and settings together. The same Minecraft version does not mean Pokémon, inventory, or mod data can be transferred without migration. Keep the old, consistent state and try the switch with a copy.
The clip shows prepared COBBLEVERSE 1.7.3 scenes. It is not a like-for-like comparison with Pixelmon 9.4.1 and not current proof of features of Cobblemon Official 1.8.1.
A Decision Your Group Can Justify
Choose the pack in which your friends can actually use the gameplay they want. If you already have a suitable shared Fabric setup, that may speak for the offered Cobblemon route. If your preferred features are in the reviewed Pixelmon setup, its NeoForge instance may fit. The loader is a compatibility requirement, not a quality rating.
With a budget of exactly zero euros, the MCF pack offers described here do not fit. In that case, look for another documented way to run it or first plan an ordinary free Minecraft session. A paid pack entry should not be advertised as a free Pokémon server.
FAQ
Is Pixelmon 9.4.1 still a beta?
The official Modrinth list reviewed on October 7 marks 9.4.1 as a release. The older beta label in the previous text has been corrected.
Which pack runs with less RAM?
The existing historical tests do not allow a direct load comparison. Both reviewed Official pack offers are listed with 6 GB; Optimised is a separate 4 GB entry.
Can Java and Bedrock players play Pokémon together here?
Not with the described Java content packs. Bedrock cannot load their mod content.
Does every friend have to install the entire matching pack?
They need the required matching client instance. A single core mod or a differently assembled pack is not automatically compatible.
Does a similar Pokémon menu mean the same permissions?
No. Permissions depend on the specific mod, its review, and the permission management in use. Test the desired feature with a normal account.
Can I switch the shared world between the two packs?
Not without checking the world and mod data. Back up the complete old state and test a copy; the same Minecraft version alone is not enough.
