As of: September 23, 2026. Mojang released Minecraft Java Edition 26.3 "Wilderness Bound" on September 15, 2026. For a pure vanilla server, the switch is possible. If you use plugins or mods, it's better to wait: as of the check date, Paper only offers ALPHA builds for 26.3, NeoForge is at 26.3.0.10-beta, and only Fabric is already stably supported with Loader 0.19.5 and Fabric API 0.161.0+26.3. At mcfreehost, Paper, Fabric, and NeoForge servers can currently be selected up to 26.2.
What's new in 26.3?
26.3 is a Game Drop with building and exploration content. The official announcement mentions, among other things:
- the Dappled Forest biome with poplars in red, orange, and yellow, red shrubs, and tree fungi
- poplar wood as a complete wood type
- stairs and slabs made of wool and concrete
- cushions for sitting and straw beds made of hay bales
- abandoned camps as a new structure and new explorer maps
New biomes and structures are only generated in chunks that have never been generated before. On an existing world, you'll therefore only find the Dappled Forest in previously unexplored areas.
Which server software is ready?
| Server Software | Status for 26.3 as of 09/23/2026 | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Vanilla | official release | switch possible, backup beforehand |
| Paper | ALPHA builds only | stay on 26.2 until a stable build appears |
| Fabric | Loader 0.19.5, Fabric API 0.161.0+26.3 | only switch once every mod has a 26.3 version |
| NeoForge | 26.3.0.10-beta | stay on 26.2 |
With Fabric, there's the added factor that Mojang switched several systems to data packs with 26.3. Fabric API removed interfaces for this, for example for fuels, composting, and stripping blocks. Mods built for 26.2 therefore often don't run under 26.3. Details can be found in the Fabric update overview.
The same principle applies to Bedrock crossplay via Geyser: the Java side must match the version Geyser was built for. Check after every switch whether Bedrock players can still join.
Why isn't 26.3 selectable at mcfreehost yet?
We only unlock a new Minecraft version once a test server has been verified to start with it, including loaded Geyser and Floodgate for Bedrock players. For 26.2, this verification is complete; for 26.3, it isn't yet. Without this test, you might end up with a server that runs, but on which your friends on phone or console can no longer join.
How to prepare for the switch
- Create a complete backup of the world, configuration, plugins, and mods, and download it.
- Check for every plugin and mod whether a version explicitly released for 26.3 exists.
- Test the switch first with a copy of the world, never with the only world file.
- After starting, check the console, login, permissions, and the most important functions, including with a Bedrock device if you use crossplay.
- Keep the backup. A world that has been saved once with 26.3 should not be played further with 26.2.
If the server no longer starts after a version switch, the guide Minecraft Server Won't Start helps with troubleshooting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to switch to 26.3 right away?
No. 26.2 remains playable, and your clients can also select 26.2 in the Minecraft Launcher. Switch once your plugins or mods are ready.
Why isn't the version called 1.22?
Since 2026, Mojang has been counting by year: versions start with 26, followed by the drop number.
Which Java version does a 26.x server need?
The 26.x versions need Java 25. At mcfreehost, the version switch in the panel automatically selects the matching Java version.
What about the 26.4 snapshot?
Since September 22, the first snapshot for 26.4 has been available. Snapshots are test versions and can damage worlds. Only try them with a copy.
